Support and Partnerships

Working Collectively

Te Kohuroa Rewilding works with a range of organisations, community groups, mana whenua, funders and conservation experts to deliver rewilding programs to the community.

Our Supporters

Leigh Marine Lab

The University of Auckland’s (UoA) marine research laboratory specialises in providing field research opportunities for marine science students, postgraduate researchers and academic staff. Located at Te Hāwere-ā-Maki, Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve (often called Goat Island), the university research team has a broad range of experience in reef ecology, kelp and restoration processes.

TKRI receives guidance from the science team at ‘the lab’ for the delivery of the kelp restoration program, and for carrying out monitoring and surveying to measure the communities’ rewilding impact.

Restore Rodney East

Restore Rodney East (RRE) is a charitable trust dedicated to supporting a network of environmental organisations across the eastern rural and coastal areas of Rodney. The Trust is run by a passionate group of volunteers who support new and innovative conservation projects.

RRE has been the umbrella organisation for Te Kohuroa Rewilding since 2024. They provide legal and financial support, which enabled the TKRI Pilot Program, and also the long-term expansion of the project in 2025. RRE’s land-based ecological connectivity map concept is now being extended to the marine environment through the project’s work.

Tau Ki Ākau

Tau ki Ākau | Ridge to Reef, is a five-year MBIE funded research project looking at ways to enhance the long-term viability of coastal reef systems. It is a mātauranga Māori-led, science informed project that explores how mātauranga and science come together to create the strongest possible case for achieving sustainable coastal reef ecosystems.

Tau ki Ākau is providing ongoing support to expand the project’s ‘ridge to reef’ vision for full ecosystem recovery, and also providing expert advice on restoration processes that benefit both the freshwater and marine habitats.

Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust

The Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust (MTSCT), originally Nga Maunga ki te Moana, is a national leader in conservation, environmental education, and community-driven restoration. The trust works to protect and connect New Zealand’s freshwater and marine environments, fostering conservation through education and community engagement.

MTSCT provided foundational support through the development of the TKRI Pilot Program, by engaging and training the community in environmental skills in both the freshwater and marine space. MTSCT continue to support the project through training days, event delivery and freshwater education and monitoring.

Auckland Council

Auckland Council (AC), Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau, is the local government council for the Auckland Region. The council provides ongoing services to the Rodney East region including local parks and reserves maintenance, biosecurity monitoring, supporting community initiatives, providing funding and delivering education.

TKRI works with a broad range of Auckland Council’s departments to connect community with on the ground restoration activities (such as the Adopt A Park Schools Program), deliver community education (such as Marine Biosecurity workshops), and increase the respectful representation of Mātauranga Māori and good treaty practices carried out by the project.

Manuhiri Kaitiaki Charitable Trust

The Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust provides cultural facilitation and environmental services through the Manuhiri Kaitiaki Charitable Trust (MKCT) to support community initiatives within their rohe.
Te Au ō Moana, the trust’s Ocean Strategy and strategic framework, encapsulates a wide array of concerted efforts and visionary projects aimed at restoration, mitigation, and the safeguarding of our marine environments.

TKRI continues to engage with MKCT to ensure all restoration work within the Te Kohuroa Matheson Bay area aligns with the trust’s wishes and objectives for environmental remediation within their rohe.
